Now that school is out, Weston and I have been having fun in the kitchen! I’ll admit that our repertoire is limited right now. We mostly bake together and make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! But recently we made these easy cake mix doughnuts and they were a huge hit with the whole family!
I have a feeling that our breakfast together this summer just got a bit more fun!
Easy Cake Mix Doughnuts
I should start by admitting that my recent sweet indulgence of choice is the doughnut. It’s all Weston’s fault because he is the biggest doughnut fan I know. So when we received the Holstein Housewares Fun Doughnut Maker recently it was like it was meant to be! So Weston and I hit the kitchen together to whip up some easy homemade doughnuts together! It was perfect for our family breakfast together that we make a routine during the summer!
We love using cake mix to make other treats besides cupcakes (which we love) so it only made sense to pull a box out of the pantry and put it to work!
We actually made our doughnuts a bit lighter on fat and cholesterol by using a can of soda rather than oil and eggs to prep our cake mix. You can also use a can of diet soda to cut down on the calories making these sweet treats a bit lighter of a version for your family!
Just make sure your soda choice matches your cake flavor. Lemon lime is great with lighter colored cakes and fruity flavors. Cola and root beer works well with chocolate flavors and even red velvet!
What You Need:
For doughnuts
- 1 box cake mix (flavor of your choice, they all work well!)
- 1 can soda
- Non stick cooking spray
For glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2-3+ TBSP milk (you may need more to get the consistency you need)
- Sprinkles (if desired)
What You Do:
For doughnuts
- Mix cake mix and soda until well blended.
- Spray the doughnut maker with nonstick cooking spray.
- Put batter into a frosting bag or gallon sized plastic bag and snip the tip. This works well for filling each well in the doughnut maker.
- Fill each well with batter and then close the top of the doughnut maker to bake.
- Bake for 4-5 minutes and check. If doughnuts have not risen, allow them additional time but check on them each minute.
- Once done, remove from doughnut maker and place on wire rack to cool.
The doughnut maker will brown the edges of the doughnuts so if you use a lighter colored cake mix, fill the wells with a bit less batter to avoid the doughnuts touching the top as they bake. But if you’re glazing or frosting your doughnuts, you won’t even see the browned tops!
What You Do:
For glaze
- Mix 2 TBSP milk with the powdered sugar.
- Add more milk 1/2 TBSP at a time until you get the desired consistency.
- Dip one side of cooled doughnuts into glaze. Sprinkle with sprinkles if desired.
- Let doughnuts sit for a few minutes for glaze to harden slightly and enjoy!
If you want to stack your doughnuts, prepare them in advance and allow the glaze to harden on the doughnuts for at least an hour!

Hello. Just curious about what type of soda does your recipe call for? Thank you.
