May is Better Sleep Month and in honor of all of the tired parents out there who need more sleep, I wanted to send out a gentle reminder of the reasons why!
4Â Reasons You Need More Sleep
As a busy mom it can be tough to make sure you get enough sleep. If you’re like me, you’re all about making sure the kids get enough sleep. But sometimes you have to stop and focus on yourself. Here are a few reasons why!
1. Health
As parents we need to stay as healthy as we can for our kids. Insufficient sleep has been linked to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity! It can take years for these problems to develop but we know how fast time flies when you’re raising kids!
2. Happiness
I know that the first thing to go when I don’t get enough sleep is my sunny disposition. My children would be happy to share stories about when I’m grumpy, I’m sure. But it’s true, when we’re overtired we’re more likely to have emotions that are just out of whack!
3. Clarity
As a mom I need to be as alert as I can be. I need as much clarity as I can get to handle the adventures in parenting that seem to arise everyday. If you don’t get enough sleep you might spend the day feeling a bit fuzzy or confused because your brain needs sleep! I think it’s related to “mommy brain” for sure!
4. Memory
Speaking of “mommy brain” and forgetting things, sleep loss can be part of the problem! Some studies have show that our brains process our memories from the day while we sleep. If our memories don’t get stored correctly, they could be lost.
I feel like this explains a lot…
So, you need more sleep, but how do you get more sleep?
Sleep Number SleepIQ® technology
According to a recent Sleep Number® survey, Americans are getting an average of 6.7 hours of sleep which is well below the recommended 8 hours—some are even getting less than 4 hours a night! I know I have nights like that from time to time. Lately I’ve been averaging around 7 hours of sleep. And I’m feeling it!
While I know a few reasons why I’m not getting enough sleep, I’d love to know more about what goes on when I’m sleeping. But very few of us actually track our sleep. We like to track our exercise, food, and water but what about our sleep?
Sleep Number® makes tracking your sleep easy – with SleepIQ® technology, you have nothing to wear, nothing to turn on, nothing to do. All you have to do is sleep.
There are sensors that work directly with the advanced DualAir™ technology inside the Sleep Number bed. They measure a variety of things including breathing rate, heart rate, and movement so you can learn more about the quality of your sleep!
Check it out at a store near you using the Sleep Number store locator.
Research says it takes 30 days to break a bad habit! Can you believe it! They seem so easy to make but so challenging to break! So in honor of Better Sleep Month in May, Sleep Number is asking us how we will commit to sleep.
I know one thing I could do to getting more sleep is stick to the bed time I’ve set for myself. And when that time rolls around each night, I need to put away the devices and just go to bed. I get a little carried away reading books on my apps or streaming something to watch after the kids go to bed. But I’m going to commit to sleep this month!
Tell me how you’ll #CommitToSleepSweeps this month!
