Paper Plate Turkey Craft with Patterning

I will admit that I love paper plate crafts and activities. Paper plates are super affordable crafting supplies and when you’re teaching in a classroom and have 20 students crafting, you need affordable! Plus, there are so many different things you can do with paper plates. One of my favorites for the fall season is Thanksgiving Pumpkin Pie which is a great sensory activity for little ones.

When possible, I like to incorporate some learning into our crafts. So when W and I decided to make a paper plate turkey craft for the grandparents, I figured it was a great time to have some fun with patterning.

Paper Plate Turkey Craft with Elmer's #elmersacademy

We received an Elmer’s Early Learners Academy Kit that was full of all the supplies we needed to make our paper plate turkey, including the Elmer’s Early Learners Glue Stick and Glue Pen. Of course, you can use a regular bottle of glue or glue stick but I love that these craft supplies are designed for the younger children.

What you need:

  • Paper plate
  • Brown construction paper
  • Red and orange construction paper scraps
  • Assorted tissue paper colors, cut into squares
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue
  • Scissors

What you do:

  1. Cut tissue paper into squares and group each color together.
  2. Cut paper plate in half.
  3. Trace a circle on the brown construction paper. This will be the body and face of the turkey.
  4. Allowing your child to begin gluing the tissue paper on in a patter of colors. Modeling goes a long way with this one for the younger kids! Create a row along the top of the paper plate. Then continue the pattern on the next row until the plate is full of squares.
  5. Glue brown circle on the front of the paper plate.
  6. Glue the eyes on to the circle.
  7. Use the red and orange scraps to cut a triangle beak and a red squiggle. Add to the brown circle.

Paper Plate Turkey Craft: Patterning

W had a great time gluing the tissue paper on his turkey and I loved that this activity gave him the experience of using glue without being too messy! I’m all for messy play but sometimes this mommy needs a break! Still, as a teacher I know that learning to use glue is an important skill to have to be prepared for school!
