Paper Plate Pumpkin Craft

Paper Plate Pumpkin Craft

My kids love to paint and I love to contain messes. So when we started thinking of fun crafts to do in preparation of the holidays, paper plates seemed like the perfect canvas! So today is the first in a series of Holiday Paper Plate Crafts with the Paper Plate Pumpkin craft. Each month, we’ll feature a new paper plate creation made by my 2-year-old.

The level of difficulty can change depending on the age of your child and other craft items may be introduced but one thing will stay the same, the canvas will be a paper plate!

For this month’s paper plate craft we created an orange pumpkin. We used a simple sponge brush to make dotting a little easier and quite fun for my young daughter. If you’re still hesitant about getting messy with your toddler here’s proof that it can be contained (somewhat).

What you need:

  • Paper plate
  • Orange, brown, and black paints (we used our craft paint but you can use washable non-toxic)
  • Round sponge brush

What you do:

1. Lay down a piece of newspaper or butcher paper onto the table. Then place paper plate upside down.

2. Squeeze a little bit of orange onto another paper plate and let your child start painting! Fair warning – your child might want to experiment with the brush and feel the texture of the paint and brush on their skin.

3. Once the plate is completely covered in orange, let your child dot a brown stem at the top of the plate.

4. To finish off your pumpkin, add a face in black paint. You can let your child create the face or you can create it for them (whichever they prefer). My daughter wanted to start on her next project so I finished this one for her.
