Operation Organization: How to Organize the Sock Drawer

Share:

Operation OrganizationI didn’t realize what a mess socks could be until W was born and he started wearing socks. Sure, adult socks are a pain to get matched up and it’s frustrating when the washing machine or dryer eats one but baby socks seem to be at least ten times worse. They are so tiny in the beginning and they are still so small even though W has gotten bigger. They get caught in the other laundry and it seems nearly impossible to get them all matched up because there is always one or two that are missing.

Operation Organization SocksI have figured out the problem and how to fix it! The problem is that I have purchased too many different brands of socks for W. Some are white with gray toes, some are white with a colored stripe around the ankle, and some are just plain white. Obviously, the biggest problem comes when it’s time to match up the socks with the colored stripes. He can’t wear one with a red stripe and one with a blue stripe! We need a pair! Those socks with the stripes are cute but they are such a pain!

Now the solid white socks and the white socks with the gray toes are a much different situation. As long as I can find two of them, they can go together! It doesn’t matter if they are the two gray toe socks that came together in the package, they can match with any other white sock with a gray toe!

So, I’ve learned another lesson in motherhood and it’s one that is going to bring help to the sock drawer. An easy way to approach organizing the sock drawer in your little one’s dresser is to buy a few packages of the same types of socks! Then as they come out of the dryer you can easily pair them up or just throw them all in a basket! It won’t matter if one goes missing because you can just match it up with another one!

Organize your child’s sock drawer by buying only one type of sock. Then they all match and it doesn’t matter if one gets lost!

It seems so simple and I wonder why I didn’t think of it until now. Oh, because it takes being a mother to figure out some of the most simple solutions!

How do you keep your little one’s sock drawer organized? Is it a challenge to organize little girl’s socks too? Any tips or tricks?

  1. I pin them together after i take them off and put them in a lingerie bag that way they dont get eaten by the dryer and the pairs stay together

  2. I just match them up and tuck one inside the other – if I can get that far, it’s a good day. I could never organize a sock drawer!

  3. I hate socks… never wear them unless it’s freezing outside… I have a whole bag of lonely socks – I tried to buy my kids one style of socks but the rest of the family intervened and started buying cute socks… so I gave up and now we just go on a weekly sock hunt to find wayward socks in the house…

  5. I was G’s clothes separate. So for now this isn’t a problem thankfully. Great tip though.

  6. I had a friend give me socks for my son and they were all in a bag. Bless her heart but I couldn’t match half of them. My son was born being able to wear size 3 baby shoes as well so that didn’t help. We buy only one type of white socks and the rest are different patterns so there’s not to much trouble anymore.

  8. Thanks for the tips. My sock drawer is organized, but end up losing a sock here and there. I swear the washing machine eats them lol

I have had a system with white socks I just put a number inside the sock and matched them, but then comes the dark socks and the ones that get lost in the ????? washer????. I now just match as soon as I get them out of the dryer and fold them together and put them in the drawers. I clean out the drawers once a week, and gather all the singles that have appeared during the week and match with the big bag of socks that I haven’t found a mate for. I use to pin them together with a safety pin but it took so long to stop and take them out. The kids just unpinned and left the pin in the drawer open and eventually we had the pin stick emergency. I will continue to just match them as they come out of the dryer and put the extras aside. The good thing is I do find a mate for some of the singles and it’s easy to find a extra sock to use for dusting. Wish we had a sock genie that could help out with all this socks.
