Back to School Fashion
When I think of back to school, I think of backpacks, school supplies, and new clothes. For kids. Well, I do think about school supplies for myself and this morning I was at the teacher supply store buying some new classroom decorations. Back to school prep means getting my classroom set up and getting ready for my students.
It also means trying to figure out how to get W to go to bed before 11:30 at night. Yes, I know. Routine and consistency! I’m working on it! He is consistently sleeping from about 11:30pm to 8:30 or 9:00 in the morning. Does that count?
So even though I’m going back to school each fall, I don’t think much about myself. And definitely not when it comes to back to school fashion and style. After checking out the Back to School Shopping #momsguide last week, I was feeling inspired!
This is a rare occurrence. My husband has more clothes than me. Yes, it’s that bad. When I find things I like, I’ll buy them in multiple colors or prints. I’ll wear them until the end. I am not the type who is always wearing the newest styles although if I had someone to guide me, I would love to do that!
But I was inspired and headed out to Sears to give myself a searsStyle makeover that I definitely needed! Well, makeover might be too grand of a word. I was just looking for a new outfit!
Let’s start small here.
Inspired by searsStyle
I love the mall. I just don’t love shopping for clothes much these days. But I have the right to feel like I look good. All moms do! So, I was inspired by the Back to School guide searsStyle tip to choose clothes that can go from dropping the kids off at school to a night out with the girls.
I thought I might find something to wear for Meet the Teacher. Something that would make me feel really good about myself and confident as I meet my students and their families. I was feeling and inspired as I headed into the mall!
I also loved the example outfit in the guide and I had stripes on my mind! Who doesn’t love stripes? Well, I’m sure a lot of people but I do. I think they are a great way to add a bit of color. Yes, that is my fashionista opinion! Don’t laugh too loud, please.
So, I was looking for an outfit that could transition and maybe had some stripes! Sounds easy enough!
Back to School Shopping with Mom
I took my mom along with me on this shopping trip. She is my cheerleader. She will be honest about how clothes look but is also very encouraging as well. She is a cheerleader for positivity when it comes to body image. She has given me daily affirmations to help turn my mind and thoughts around.
So with my mom by my side and more than a few things to try on, I headed into the dressing room. The dressing room of doom! Okay, that wasn’t a very positive thought! But I definitely have to be in the right mood to go clothes shopping and try things on in the dressing room.
I was excited because I thought I had found a few pieces that would work well for me. I’m never quite sure until I get into the dressing room though. I wish I had a better eye for fashion but I have to put the pieces on to see each time.
Formula for Back to School
I tried on a number of items including a variety of shirts, a pair of jeans, and a pair of shorts. These are just a few of the outfits I pieced together. I’m very much a t-shirt and jeans type of girl. I’m sure you can sense that from these outfits.
I loved the red striped shirt. LOVED it. It had the stripes I was looking for and went great with jeans. I thought with heels and a shrug, it could easily go from dealing with kids at school to hanging out with the girls. It was a bit grippy so I wanted to go a size up. Not in stock! I was bummed but no matter how much I loved it, I need it to be appropriate as well.
The other shirt was a no go. The shorts didn’t fit well and the shirt was not becoming at all.
I will admit that I was getting discouraged. This is why I don’t like to go shopping for clothes.
Hang in there, Mom!
But I had my mom by my side and she encouraged me to keep looking. I didn’t want to try on anything else. I even started coming up with better uses for the money I would spend on clothes. Such a mom thing to do. But she convinced me to keep trying.
She convinced me that I deserved a new outfit and I deserved to look good.
So, I pass that on to all of my fellow moms! I know back to school is a busy time. Getting everyone ready and back on schedule can be stressful and wear you out. So you deserve to spoil yourself just a little bit! Go out and brave the dressing room!
Although I didn’t make it out of Sears with any stripes, I did find an outfit that can easily be changed from day time in the car rider line at school with the kids to a girls night out with my mom friends! Success! I may not be trendy but from time to time I can put something cute together. I deserve and so do you!
If you’re a mom like me who isn’t always up on the latest trends, Now + Here Fashion on Facebook is a great way to see what’s going on in fashion! They offer great tips and tricks. I just read a great bit about dealing with frizz if you have curly or wavy hair. It’s a battle I fight every single day!
