Keeping Toddlers Busy with Letter Awareness

I’m a busy mom. It’s true. Most of us are but we still want to give our children opportunities that will help them grow and learn. As a teacher, I know learning starts from a young age through exploration. As a mom of a toddler, I know that it can be a challenge to keep W busy. The joys of short attention spans.

Sometimes keeping toddlers busy seems like a major challenge. But it doesn’t have to be. It can be extremely simple. And educational.

Recently, I discovered some magnetic letters from when I taught first grade. If you don’t have any, you can pick them up cheap at the dollar store or Walmart. I put some in a small plastic tub and pulled out one of my older baking sheets. It was quick and easy. Oh and cheap! I didn’t spend a dime since I already had the letters.

W was occupied for a good 15 minutes. Then he moved on to putting the letters on the fireplace cover. Then he started trying the magnets on other surfaces to see where they would stick.

Learning through exploration! I loved it!

How do you keep your child busy and learning without spending much money?

  1. This is such a great idea. We moms sometimes forget how the simplest of toys will make our kids happy.

  4. I used to have the magnets on the fridge for my son to play with when he was younger, he loved it!
I also used to make him sing the alphabet and numbers as we were taking a bath or walking-learning without them knowing it is genius!

This is a cool idea! This is perfect for my 3 yr old grandson for when he comes over. We do a lot of crafts

  6. Oh that is such a neat idea! We have those little numbers and letters for Carter, but I put them away…as we got 2 puppies last year…and I didnt want them to eat the magnets. So, they have been in our cupboard. The puppies do not go into the playroom…so this will be perfect as we can bring them out again!!! Thanks for the GREAT idea!
