How To Switch Dog Food
My three dogs are a huge part of our family. Before W was born, our rat terrier was our baby. I still considered myself a mom. Of course being mom to some furballs is a lot different to being mom to a busy toddler. Despite having W around, the dogs are still extremely important.
When we go shopping we do our best to find the food that is best for them. All of our dogs our small, so we usually buy food for small dogs because they seem to prefer it. It just works better for us. It took us a few tries to find the brand that they all seemed to enjoy. It was quite a process and I wanted to make sure we took our time so they didn’t get sick or have trouble.
Recently we had the opportunity to try Cesar Meaty Selects which meant switching foods again. So we took it one step at a time. We took about a week to make the complete switch.
- Mix the old and new food together for the first 1-2 days. Use approximately 75% old food and 25% new food.
- If the first few days go well, you can move to a 50/50 mix for the next couple of days.
- By the 5th and 6th day, the food mix should be 25% old food and 75% new food.
- On the last day, we were able to let the dogs have 100% of the new food without any problems!
Cesar Meaty Selects
We use a mix of dry dog food and wet dog food in our house. Our boston terrier is overweight so we have been following the advice of our veterinarian. We feed the dogs twice a day. They get approximately a 1/2 cup of food in the morning and in the evening. We use just a bit of wet food and mix it in well with the dry dog food.
We have discovered the best dog food for our dogs has smaller chunks. They are able to get it out of their bowls easier. They also like food with some texture to it. They like meaty chunks so I was pleased to see that the Cesar Meaty Selects dog food looked like the type that they enjoy. We mixed it in with our current dry food but you can serve it alone as well.
The Meaty Selects also come in a 10 ounce resealable container. We only use about a tablespoon of food in each of the bowls so one container lasts us for a stretch of days. Having a lid that seals it shut is extremely convenient.
So what did the dogs think?
They loved it! They eat in separate rooms because otherwise our boston terrier will try to eat the pug’s food as well. So I was able to capture our rat terrier, Toby, as he enjoyed his new food mix. He never hesitated once during the switch! Once we made it to 100% Cesar Meaty Selects, he dove right in!
Yes, that is his empty bowl. It looks like it just came out of the dishwasher! He got every last bite out of that bowl and then looked around for more. I would say that is the sign of a dog approved dinner!
The dogs appeared to enjoy both the Filet Mignon and Porterhouse Steak flavors that we received. We have definitely found a new food that works well for us. The dogs enjoy it and I like the larger can size. It lasts longer and we don’t have to buy as many cans when we go grocery shopping.
