Cheap DIY Homemade Ice Pack

Homemade Ice Pack aka DIY Soapy Mess

W gets his fair share of bumps and bruises. Of course, by fair share I mean he always has a new bruise. Oh and he bumps his head a couple of times a day. I’m hoping it’s a toddler thing and not a clumsy thing. Remember when I made my own Homemade Ice Pack and was proud? (Seriously, I was probably more proud than necessary.)

I just felt all mommy homemaker like or something.

Well, it didn’t go quite as smoothly as I claimed it did. There was a bit of mess involved. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share the less than stellar moments behind my DIY job!

The Lowdown

All you need to make your own DIY Ice Pack is rubbing alcohol and Dawn dish detergent. Well, you also need what bags you plan to put them in and I highly recommend packing tape to seal your ice pack.

Using 2 parts Dawn and 1 part rubbing alcohol, mix it up. I was able to mix in my measuring cup. Although I didn’t say it wasn’t a messy experience!

Apparently I mix like my toddler might mix things! Spill it while I mix and then drop the spoon on the counter. Oh well, it’s Dawn and rubbing alcohol! That means my counter is probably cleaner than before I started. Not that my counters are horribly dirty or anything. But yeah…

Once you’ve mixed it a bit, pour the mixture into your bag. Sounds so simple, right?

Nope, that’s not a leaking bag. That’s just my poor pouring skills. Back to cleaning the counter!

I do recommend that you double bag your ice packs though. I bag it and then seal it with packing tape. Then bag it a second time and seal it again. Ours is holding up well! So far so good! Oh and my counters are nice and clean too!

Do you have any DIY tips for creating your own alternatives to store-bought items?
