Home Organization with Kids, A Confession

Home Organization with Kids

That photo is how my living room looks every day… in my dreams. It all starts out so organized. While it is still slightly cluttered, it is under control. It’s my version of home organization with kids. A way to contain the toys that kids can help with. If it gets too complicated the only people cleaning up will be the adults.

So I use a bunch of baskets and there is no particular order to what goes in each one. As long as there aren’t cars all over the floor then all is well. Right? Yes, this is the way my living room looks in case you should every stop by.

But only because I will have just finished scrambling to throw everything into buckets.

Here’s what it really looks like at any given time during the day…

Reality of Home Organization with Kids #mommymishaps

Yes, that is my confession. Even getting a different shelving unit with more baskets hasn’t solved much. It might have made it worse actually. W loves to take all of the containers off the shelf and stack them up. Which means toys everything and a kid who suddenly has a step stool! Scary!

At the beginning of the day and the end of the day, things look like the first picture. The rest of the day belongs to my little man. Guess what? I’m okay with that! Though, if you plan to come visit I’ll admit that I’ll still clean it all up before you get here!

But I’ve got a new plan. I have been researching ideas for making our home a more Montessori-like environment. And I have a new plan that involves some new shelving and a large reduction in the number of toys in the room. I’m excited for this new project and the changes we might see!

  2. I let good enough be good enough. Organizing is important to me, but if it gets messy throughout the day, I don’t worry about it. As long as everything has a place to go to at night, it’s all good.

  3. This is a common battle of mine each and every day! I start with a clean home I end up with a disaster! As long as I have my clean living room to escape and hide in, I can manage the clutter elsewhere.

  4. I don’t have kids yet, but I struggle with this even just babysitting. I like to give the child(ren) my full attention while babysitting so I don’t walk behind them picking up the entire time. Instead I clean up while they nap and then like 15 minutes before their parents are expected home I scramble around cleaning the mess that has been made since nap. Occasionally i’ve had people come home early and I’ve felt embarrassed but realistically, everyone who has spent time with toddlers knows that’s how it goes, lol.

  5. LOL – Take your mess and multiply by 10 . That’s what I had to deal with for YEARS.

  6. I try to clean and pick up toys every day

  7. Hi there,
Your kid looks adorable, and to think that he has playroom all to himself? He must be in kiddie heaven. Have you thought of teaching him to clean up after himself when he’s done? Nothing major, just putting back a couple of toys after he’s done playing with them. You can then reinforce this behavior with his favorite snack to teach him responsibility from an early age. Just my two cents

  9. Home organization with kids? I fail pretty miserably! It’s not utter chaos, but it’s pretty low on the list because I get tired of cleaning up the same messes!
