As a new mom it can be difficult to find the time to workout. Add in sleep-deprivation and the struggle to find your new balance and it can really be a challenge. There are ways to fit in a little extra physical activity without having to commit 30 minutes to a dedicated workout.
5 Ways to Fit Fitness into Your Day
- Walk! Walk whenever you can! Instead of sitting and rocking the baby, walk with her in your arms or put her in the carrier and walk. If you have the choice to walk or ride — walk! Park further away and push the stroller to your destination! Just walk whenever you can!
- Watch TV! If you get some downtime to watch your favorite show, use the commercials to your advantage. Get up off the couch and do jumping jacks, crunches, or even push ups with your baby!
- Play with your kids! Get on the floor with them! Go outside with them! Play chase! Play tag! Just get moving with your children and you will reap the benefits of better health and worn out kids!
- Clean your house. Yes, I said it. Doing chores is a great way to burn calories and get your housework done. You can burn over 100 calories vacuuming for half an hour.
- Do the yard work. This is another chore that many of us dread but it can be a great calorie burner. Go out and rake up those leaves! Weed your flower bed or even plant a new flower bed. Get the kids outside with you for a great bonding time as well!
Sure, it would be wonderful to be able to go to the gym for 30 minutes a day but this doesn’t work for all moms. So figure out what works and just get moving whenever you have a few spare moments. Don’t miss an opportunity! You’ll feel better for it!

I bought a double stroller after having baby number 2. I need to walk every morning for my sanity, gets me out of the house, we all get fresh air and the added bonus of an hour of walking up & down hills pushing about a 100lbs.
I really liked your blog! Sometimes exercise is the last thing I will make time to do but your blog showed how easy it would be to get in a little more on a daily basis
Like all the suggestions but yardwork hehe. I hate mowing our yard with the push mower, the slant on the sides of the house are too steep… but it is a great way to burn calories!
These are great ideas! The older the kids gets as well they will follow in mommies foot steps and watch less tv and get up off the couch and help out. Can even come up with great excercises that both mommy and kids can do together! It always helps having another mom in the neighborhood that you can go on walks with babies too!
