One thing that I love about fall are acorns. We have tons of trees in our yard and neighborhood. W loves collecting them and lining them all up on the driveway or on the back deck. So it seemed like the perfect timing to make some acorn inspired crafts and I couldn’t resist showing him how to make edible acorns we could enjoy for a treat!
Edible Acorns Fall Craft
Although W is a picky eater and doesn’t even like that many types of candy, he does like chocolate kisses. So these were perfect for him! I had to be willing to let him help and get a bit messy but that is part of the fun! I put together some of the pieces to look more like acorns while he had fun sticking pieces of cookie and candy together with peanut butter!
But we had a great time and the entire family enjoyed out tasty acorn treats!
What you need:
- Chocolate kisses (we used caramel filled ones this time)
- Chocolate discs or candy melts (you can also melt chocolate chips or almond bark)
- Mini peanut butter sandwich cookies
- Peanut Butter
- Peanut Butter Chips
What you do:
- Remove wrappers from all the chocolate kisses you plan to use.
- Melt the chocolate discs, candy melts, or chocolate chips according to package instructions. You will only need a little bit as this is the “glue” that will hold the peanut butter chips to the tops of the acorns.
- Spread a small amount of peanut butter on one side of a mini Nutter Butter and stick it to the flat side of a chocolate kiss. The peanut butter should hold the cookie in place.
- Dip the flat side of a peanut butter chip in the melted chocolate and place it on top of the mini Nutter Butter to create the top of the acorn.
- Set aside to let chocolate harden and repeat above steps until all acorns are made.
Obviously W couldn’t help me when I was dealing with the melted chocolate but loved sticking cookies to the chocolate kisses with peanut butter. I’m pretty sure he ate his fair share of peanut butter too as we went along. It is his favorite food!
This is a great treat to have children of all ages help with. I mentioned that W had fun sticking things together and for older kids putting these together would be easy. I love making edible crafts with with the kids because it’s fun and tasty!
