Beauty. Confidence. Self Esteem. Dove.
As a teenager I was overweight. I was lucky to have a great group of friends and a fairly good amount of confidence in myself. But it didn’t mean things were easy. I recently learned from Dove that 6 out of 10 girls stop doing what they love because they feel bad about their looks. That is 60% of girls! It made me think.
I grew up very involved in theater. I loved singing and dancing. But I questioned myself. As an adult, I can now look back on those years with a different kind of clarity. When we moved from Colorado to Texas, I didn’t pursue theater in any way. It had been a part of my life since I was 8 years old. After 13 years, I just let it all go. I do think some of it had to do with the doubts I had about my body.
Addressing the Anxiety
Dove did research that showed it is important to address the anxiety that girls have about their looks. Beauty pressure is on the rise and girls’ confidence declines as they grow older. Check out these findings from Dove Research: The Real Truth About Beauty: Revisited.
• Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful!
• Only 11% of girls globally are comfortable using the word beautiful to describe themselves.
• 72% of girls feel tremendous pressure to be beautiful.
• 80% of women agree that every woman has something about her that is beautiful but do not see their own beauty.

I love the idea of this rally! Major kudos to Dove. I was such a dorky kid and it was rough. I am still pretty dorky but have learned to embrace it!

I LOVE people talking about how to improve self-esteem!! I had none growing up and it was so hard. It wasn’t until college that I truly started liking myself! This is great! Thanks for sharing!

I have really appreciated all that I have seen Dove do for women and girls in the last few years. Their campaigns really have been great – featuring real women – that is rare! I will check out the link. Thank you for sharing.

I had a hard time in school. Not with my friends, my friends were awesome, but with some jerk guys. I had to constantly remind myself that I was awesome and was pretty good at ignoring any negative comments. But if I didn’t have the self confidence I don’t know where I would have turned or what I would have done. Changing the image of a the “average woman” is a big step in the right direction to getting teen girls to realize that not everyone is stick thin and beauty is not in a size.
