W is a few months shy of turning 3 and I have been itching to take him to the movies. I’ll admit that I don’t know if he’s ready for a full length movie in the theaters. But I’ve been keeping my eyes open for the movie I thought might catch his attention and make our first movie going experience together a good one. Disney Planes movie is the movie for us, I think.
Why? Because this movie has heart (among other things like great characters, animated airplanes, and laughs for every member of the family)!
Oh, and it is also has very limited scenes that I think might scare him. SPOILER ALERT! I will be mentioning these further down, so you have been warned!
Disney Planes: Toddler’s First Movie
After having the opportunity to screen Disney’s Planes in June during the Planes press day I attended, I started to have the feeling that it had the potential to be W’s first movie in the theaters.
Sure, I will admit that I fell in love with the film after seeing. So I was hoping that it would work out to be our first family trip to the movie theater. But I have been realistic about it and put a lot of thought into whether or not it would work for us. I knew that it could always be a date night for J and I if we didn’t think W could handle it.
But there are a few reasons I think he’s ready and Planes is the movie to try out.
Disney’s Planes Has Heart
Disney Planes follows the story of Dusty, a little crop duster with a dream. We all have dreams don’t we? It’s a message I think everyone can relate with and understand. While life in Propwash Junction seems to be wonderful for most of its residents, Dusty has bigger dreams. He dreams of getting out his little town and racing through the clouds with the best racers in the world.
But he has some hurdles to overcome. How could a crop duster ever be a racing plane? And what about Dusty’s fear of heights? Just as we all have challenges when chasing our dreams, Dusty has his own to deal with. But he has an amazing group of friends, his family really, to support him and help him achieve his dreams.
We should all be so lucky.
It’s a story of dream chasing and all of the adventures that come along the way.
My Son Loves Planes, Trains, & Automobiles
I’ll admit that with Planes, I had something on my side. W loves toy cars, trains, and pretty much any vehicle. We recently took our first flights together since he was small baby and he had a wonderful time. He talks about flying on the airplane almost every day. So Disney’s Planes is a great fit for him.
He might have fallen in love with an El Chupacabra toy I brought home from LA with me as well. When commercials for the movie come on our television, he looks for El Chu. He might think that El Chu is the star of the show. And while he does add amazing humor to the film, the movie is full of rich characters for boys and girls of all ages to fall in love with!
Not Too Scary (Spoiler Alert!)
One of the most important things I had to think about was the scare factor when thinking about taking W to the theaters. I know the theaters will be dark and loud. So I needed to make sure that the movie we saw wasn’t going to have too many elements that might startle him.
There is definitely a lot of action packed into this film, but only a few moments where I will have to keep my eye on W. Dusty does go down into the water in one scene which is the one that sticks out in my mind as being one W might not enjoy. There is also a train tunnel complete with train.
Rest assured, Dusty handles makes it through even these challenges. But they are definitely scenes to watch out for if you’re taking a little one to the theater!
Who do you plan to see Disney Planes with?
Disclosure: Disney provided me with a trip to Los Angeles to cover the Disney Planes press day. All thoughts and experiences are my own.
