Oz the Great and Powerful

When it comes to the Wizard of Oz, I am a huge fan.

I also grew up involved in musical theater. The very first show I did that was not a school production was the Wizard of Oz. I played Auntie Em and a member of the Oz Army. It meant a lot of black and white costumes and a lot of green costumes. My mom made them all for me.

It was the summer between 5th and 6th grade so I was 11 years old. I rode my back to rehearsals almost every day that summer. I remember feeling like I had found what I was meant to do. I made some amazing friends and was busy all summer. I also got to experience one of the first crushes of my adolescence. The boy who play the Cowardly Lion was in high school and I think we all had a crush on him!

In August we did two amazing shows. It was a fabulous children’s theater program that I worked with for many years after. It led to more local theater jobs and a childhood I wouldn’t have changed. I made some amazing friends and memories that I will cherish forever.

Disney Takes a Journey to Oz

When I learned that Disney would be releasing “Oz the Great and Powerful” in March 2013, I was thrilled! When I say I love the Wizard of Oz, it’s the truth. From the classic film version to the Broadway musical, Wicked, I love experiencing different perspectives on the story I know and love.

The movie’s story is a simple one. When a small-time magician Oscar Diggs finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz, he thinks he has won the lottery! But when he meets three witches who don’t believe that he is a great wizard, he must transform himself into the great and powerful Wizard. He may end up a better man as well.

I love stories of transformation and I love all things Oz, so I cannot be more excited about this movie. Plus, the trailer is gorgeous! I love movies that are beautiful to watch as well. The contrast between black and white and the color of Oz is amazing. Plus, I might like a bit of James Franco too. Hey, a mom can have her crushes too, right?

Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful will hit theaters on March 8, 2013!

Does Oz the Great remind you of any childhood memories or traditions?
