Did you know that children are spending half as much time outdoors as they did 20 years ago? As we head into the heart of summer, I can’t help but notice that the kids in my neighborhood as very active compared to many of my students. My cul-de-sac is often filled with the neighborhood kids playing basketball or riding bikes. I know that this is not the case everywhere.

DINOSAUR TRAIN’s “Buddy” supports “The Great American Backyard Campout” initiative, organized by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).

The Great American Backyard Campout campaign was designed to remind parents and children about the important benefits of spending time outdoors. In a typical week, only 6% of children ages 9-13 play outside on their own! W loves playing outside and it is definitely something I wanted to continue to encourage him to do!

The Great American Backyard Campout is scheduled for June 23rd. You can register for free. The website provides great resources  for making your camping experience a fun one! There are campfire recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, campfire songs and games, nature activities, and much more! This is a fabulous way to spend time with the family without spending much!
