The Cat in the Hat is one of the children’s books that has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have memories of reading it as a young child and then reading it with my sister when she was little as well. As a teacher, I read it almost every single year, even when I was teaching in the computer lab. W and I haven’t read the book yet but he enjoys catching the Cat on PBS so the book is definitely in our future! There are many fun activities to do with the book including these adorable Cat in the Hat Marshmallow Pops featuring Thing 1 and Thing 2!
Cat in the Hat Marshmallow Pops: Thing 1 & Thing 2
What you need:
- Jumbo Jet Puffed Marshmallows
- Lollipop Sticks
- White Candy Melts
- Red Candy Melts
- Blue Cotton Candy
- Black Candy Decorating Pen
- Wax Paper
What you do:
- Stick a lollipop stick into a marshmallow for each marshmallow pop you will be making.
- Melt the white candy melts according to package instructions.
- Using the melted white candy, make small circles on the wax paper. You’ll need one for each pop. Allow to harden completely. (You can also use vanilla almond bark for this step.)
- Meanwhile, melt the red candy melts. (You can also use red gel food coloring to color vanilla almond bark red for the marshmallows.)
- Dip each marshmallow in the red candy melts until it is completely coated. Tap gently on the side of the bowl to remove the excess candy melts.
- Place upright in a piece of foam and top with a bit of blue cotton candy. This will be the hair for the “things. Allow to harden completely.
- Remove the candy circles from the wax paper and turn over so the smooth side faces up.
- Using the candy decorating pen, write “Thing 1” or “Thing 2” for each pop. Affix these circles to the front of the marshmallow pops using a dab of red candy melts.
- Package as desired, and enjoy!
NOTE: The cotton candy is very fragile it will come off the pops easily. Handle with care.
In addition to being a fun way to explore the world of the Cat in the Hat, these marshmallow pops are also a great way to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss on March 2nd! So I recommend you grab a copy of the book and some of your favorite littles to enjoy these pops and story time!
