There are many types of dads. Some love to cook out on the grill, others love to catch a good ball game, and some are into video games and technology. If the dad in your life is one of the tech-savvy types, the BlackBerry Playbook tablet is great gift idea for Father’s Day. Of course, it’s also a great gift idea for hardworking moms!
Blackberry Playbook tablet

The BlackBerry Playbook is slim, sleek, and ultra-portable making it a great gift for busy parents on the go!

We’re a very tech-heavy family. I’m fine with it and it’s all about balance. We can enjoy time online working and playing but we also make sure to get out of the house and spend time with W. One thing I love about tablets is the portability aspect.

When I received the BlackBerry Playbook, I immediately cooed over how cute and compact it was! It weighs less than one pound and measures 5.1″ by 7.6″ which makes it fit perfectly in my purse and our diaper bag! While I thought it was adorable, I wondered what the display would be like. I’ve seen some small tablets with displays that I can barely even use.

The BlackBerry Playbook is not one of those tiny tablets! Its 7″ LCD screen is a great size and has an amazing resolution!

The BlackBerry Playbook tablet has amazing screen resolution!

I’ve also learned that taking photos of another electronic device can be challenging! It was worth the challenge to show you how large the navigation and icons are on the BlackBerry Playbook. I was extremely impressed! The screen was also extremely responsive to my touch.

I was pleased to see that many of my must-have apps were pre-loaded on the tablet. YouTube? Check! Calculator? Check! Camera? Check!

There were also some that I was interested in checking out. I have heard of Kobo Books but never used it before. I was also interested in trying Slacker Radio and seeing what it was all about. I could waste hours checking out apps… wait, it’s not about what I could do, I actually have wasted hours researching and trying out apps!

BlackBerry Playbook downloadable apps

I have used a number of different tablets and electronic devices over the past few years. This was my first time using a BlackBerry product so I was interested to see how it compared to my other experiences.

My apps were extremely easy to review and update as needed. I already needed to update a few apps the first time I used my Playbook. I’m not sure I will keep all of the pre-installed apps, but I like to check them out before I start deleting. Sometimes you discover something amazing that way!

However I found that the apps available through BlackBerry were extremely limited. I’m hoping the library will continue to grow and include some of my favorite apps very soon!

One thing I would like to be able to get is my Kindle App. I read across various devices and when I discovered that Amazon doesn’t seem to have an app for Playbook yet, I was a bit bummed out. I will be waiting for it! I would love to be able to read on the Playbook at night. It’s the perfect size for me!

BlackBerry Playbook

The layout and design of the BlackBerry Playbook has some features that I really found useful for me as a new user. I will admit that I’m not one to read the manual. I like to open the box, plug in my new toy, and go. Yes, my age might say I’m getting older but I’m still a kid at heart!

Although I wasn’t familiar with the Playbook, I found it very simple to get connected to my home network. Before I knew it, I was browsing the internet. I was easily able to move back and forth between my browser window and my app window that I had open.

Get connected quickly with the BlackBerry Playbook!

It’s a breeze to add new accounts as well! This is really important to me after I ended up with a cell phone where it was a huge challenge. I like things to be easy and smooth when it comes to technology. I am addicted to checking email so I like to be able to check it on every device that I have!

To add a new account all I had to do was press the Settings gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Then I selected Accounts and Add New Account. Then I was ready to add new email accounts or social accounts like Facebook and Twitter! That is how simple it is to get set up!

BlackBerry Playbook has an easy to use keyboard

The virtual keyboard on the BlackBerry Playbook is phenomenal too! It’s extremely responsive and the keys are big enough that I don’t suffer from too many typos! As with most tablets, it will auto correct for you which is always a fun experience. I found that I had fewer typos than usual with the keyboard. That means less auto correct amusement!

Swiping was a bit different from what I was used to with my other devices. I’m getting the hang of it though. It’s all about where you swipe from:

  • If you go from the outside edge on either side, you can switch between your current apps.
  • If you swipe down from the top, a toolbar specific to the app you’re using is displayed.
  • If you go from the bottom up, you get a toolbar that shows all of the active apps and your shortcuts.
  • If you go from the bottom left corner, you will see your keyboard.
  • Try going from the top corner and you will see your status bar that has information like time, battery levels, and access to the settings menu.

It sounds like a lot but once you start playing it becomes natural!

If you’re looking for a tablet that fits into your diaper bag or purse (do you know a father with a man-purse?) check out the BlackBerry Playbook!

When I was at the zoo last week, I saw someone pull out a tablet much larger than the Playbook to take a picture of the rhinos. I was amused because it seemed to so bulky. With the Playbook I could actually see myself using it to take photos! It’s easy to pull out and take photos.

Although the cameras are not the highest quality (3 MP high-definition forward-facing camera and 5 MP high-definition rear-facing camera) they are better than the cameras on some of my friend’s phones! If you’re just looking to snap some casual shots while hanging out with the family, it’s perfect! I love that the Playbook features a forward-facing camera because W loves to pose with me that way!

Overall, I’m loving the BlackBerry Playbook tablet and it’s great to have around our house. J has been checking it out and can find enough to keep himself entertained so it’s Dad-Approved as well. Even Grambo is interested in getting in on the action, so I’ll keep you updated on how she does!

The BlackBerry Playbook is a great gift for anyone in the family who is into technology and staying connected!

While it would make a great gift for dad this Father’s Day, I have to admit that I am really enjoying using it. I plan to explore how I might use it with W. He likes to watch music videos on other devices we have but he can easily turn them off due to the locations of their buttons. With the BlackBerry Playbook, the buttons are better placed on the side of the device which I think will work better for W. It may be toddler-approved very soon if I’m willing to brave letting him sit with it!
