Beyond Holiday Giving with Boys & Girls Club of America
While I’ve been talking a lot about my holiday shopping, we’ve also been focused on the giving aspect of this season. We have been collecting and donating to a local family in need. And my goal is to continue to model the spirit of giving for W. I know that he learns by watching me. So I want to make sure that we go beyond holiday giving as well.
This year marks the 2nd annual Boys & Girls Club of America Give the Gift of a Great Future Holiday Campaign. BGCA is an organization I believe in because of the work I do as a teacher. I know how important it is for children to have support outside of the classroom. At-risk kids need as much support as they can get. BGCA is all about kids!
Give the Gift of a Great Future
As part of the campaign, you can play the free Giving Game to donate a gift to a Club this season. You play and kids win! What could be better? You can also vote in the Kids Give Back photo contest on the Boys & Girls Club of America Facebook page!
To pass on the gift of a great future to the children in your life, you can use this list of tips from BGCA to help teach your them about the importance of giving. Here are just a few of my favorite tips from the list:
- Talk about giving. When you are involved in giving, talk to the family about the cause and why you chose it.
- Volunteer together. What a great way to spend quality family time together. Volunteering helps kids learn about compassion.
- Celebrate all kinds of giving acts. No matter how your child gives back, celebrate it! Whether it’s volunteering, helping a friend or neighbor, or sharing with a sibling, praise your child! They will want to do it again!
- Make philanthropy a family value. While many people get in the spirit of giving during the holidays, continue it into other seasons as well. There are always people in need and we can always give make. You can make a difference at any time of year. If your kids see it again and again, it will become a family value and not just a holiday tradition.
It’s never too early to start modeling the habits you want to see in your children. So use the holiday season to start spreading the spirit of giving. Give the gift of a great future to your own children as well as others!
How do you teach your children about giving?

I attended Girl’s Club as a child. It was a great program that offered us all memorable opportunities many could not have experienced otherwise.

I do all of those things with my kids except for the volunteering at this point because they are still a bit young, but I do have plans for them to start volunteering with me when they get a little older.
