Back to School Tips with Microsoft Office

Back to School Tips

School has started for some kids already. I guess I should be thankful that I don’t go back to work until next week. Just enjoying the last few days of summer. Who am I kidding? My mind is in back to school mode! I have been making lists of all of the things I need to do to have my classroom ready! As I get ready I realize just how much I depend on Microsoft Office 2010.

How do I know I’m dependent on it?

We don’t  have it on our computers at school! We have a free alternative that is supposed to be comparable but it isn’t! It’s not the same! Every single time I sit down to work on something at my school computer, I pine for my laptop with Microsoft Office on it! True story and I’m not alone! Many of my fellow teachers share my pain.

So one of my top back to school tips is… get Microsoft Office if you don’t have it! I’m far more productive with it!

Microsoft Office Most Used

Must-Haves for School

The proof is in the picture. Microsoft Word 2010 and Excel 2010 are two of my most used programs. I use them for school related things and for blog related projects. Before W was born, I used them every single day for grad school. I would be lost without my Microsoft Office programs!

You probably want to tell me to be quiet now. I know, I can get a little carried away when I really like something. It’s one of my faults. But seriously, I have tried the alternatives and they don’t stack up! Trust me on this one!

4 Back to School Tips Using Microsoft Office Home & Student 2010

So what can you do with Microsoft Office that makes it worth the investment this school year?

  • Say goodbye to poster board! Instead of slaving over another boring poster board project, go high-tech with a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation. Kids love getting to create and multimedia doesn’t scare them at all! Think about how much more interesting class presentations could be!
  • Get writing! With Microsoft Word, students can write without limitations. Many of my students (even the younger ones) love writing on a computer instead of paper. It’s a great way to motivate reluctant writers!
  • Go visual! Microsoft Excel offers the ability to turn numbers into graphics. For students who are more visual learners this can be engaging and help them retain information!
  • High tech note taking! I’m new to Microsoft OneNote but am already in love. It’s great for when I’m researching lesson plans or searching for inspiration for my next blog post! You can keep audio, video, web clips and even scanned images all together and organized!
