Affordable Family Fun: Easy Peach Shortcake

Affordable Family Fun: Movie & Dessert

I’m always on the hunt for ways to have fun with my family without breaking the bank! I like to save up for big splurges but I want to have fun while we’re waiting for a big trip or activity! I want the best of both worlds! Who doesn’t? Movie night at home is a great way to have affordable family fun! Paired with an easy and cheap dessert, you have a great night in with the fam!

If you’re looking for a great family movie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My mom and I watched it recently. Yes, you read that right! My mom and I watched it. W isn’t quite old enough to get it but he played while we watched. We enjoyed it too! Not a movie I would necessarily think of when watching something with my mom but we loved it!

Once you have a great family friendly movie, all you need is a great snack! We needed #Snacks4WimpyKid! I suggest dessert! It’s because I love sweets! I’ll admit it!

Making Dessert with Del Monte Fruit Cups

We always have Del Monte fruit cups around the house. Grambo loves them for her lunch. I love them for snacks during the day. They are great for just grabbing when you need quick healthy snacks. They also work great W’s breakfast! But I knew there had to  be a way to use them for dessert.

Oh, and have I mentioned that I like things to be easy? I wanted something delicious and easy so I headed to Walmart!

Dessert with Del Monte Fruit Cups

Del Monte has an amazing variety of fruit cups! I will admit that I knew the flavor I was on the hunt for — Diced Peaches Cinnamon & Brown Sugar. We’ve had them in the past and they just called to me. I knew I wanted to make something with them. Grambo was shopping with me and she just had to try the Peaches in Raspberry-Lemonade Gel so we grabbed those too!

Easy and Affordable Dessert with Del Monte

As I was grocery shopping it hit me! I knew exactly what I was going to make! Peach Shortcake! I know it sounds really complicated but you have to remember that I don’t do complicated! My formula for motherhood doesn’t give me time for complicated! I need quick and easy!

So I grabbed my Del Monte peaches, some dessert shells, and some fat-free whipped topping! The total for all of these products was under $8 and I could make 6 desserts with it! It worked out to less than $1.25 per dessert which is definitely cheaper than going out to get frozen yogurt or eating candy at the movies!

Making Dessert Healthier with Del Monte Fruit Cups

While I like cheap family fun, I also like to make healthier choices as often as I can! The great thing about this recipe (besides being able to make it in less than 5 minutes) is that each shortcake is only about 155 calories! It’s low in fat and the sugars are reasonable too. Compare it to some of the other treats you might buy in the store and I think you’ll be surprised!

Easy Peach Shortcake Recipe

What you need:

  • Del Monte Diced Peaches with Cinnamon & Brown Sugar fruit cups
  • Dessert shells (or angel food cake)
  • Whipped topping

What you do:

  1. Unwrap a dessert shell. Open the fruit cup.
  2. Pour fruit and juice over dessert shell.
  3. Top with whipped topping.

Yes, it’s that simple! I promised you quick and easy, didn’t I? Oh and it’s tasty too! W approved! In fact we should have made him his own dessert so we didn’t all have to share!

Cheap and Easy Peach Shortcake with Del Monte

In the name of affordable family fun, I mastered the affordable! You can rent Diary of a Wimpy Kid or even buy it if it’s a movie your family will watch multiple times. It will pay for itself before you know it! But… you can also make the movie come to life for your family!

Instead of just watching the movie, why not read the book first?

Or draw your own family in DOAWK style! WARNING: I am not an artist. BEWARE!

Those are photos of my family. That is what we really look like. Aren’t we cute?

Now brace yourselves… I have done some drawing! My family is ready for their Diary of a Wimpy Kid debut… sort of.

Del Monte DOAWK

Looks like DOAWK right? And my hair definitely has that great wave. At least I got W’s hair right! None of our dogs actually look like the ones I drew but that’s the only way I know how to draw dogs. Oh and how do you like our shoes?

You can easily make it a family affair! I got W involved and it was a blast!

Affordable Family Fun: Diary of a Wimpy Kid

My little artist added some color to our family portrait after enjoying his Del Monte Peach Shortcake! I think we’ll be having this dessert more often! I can make a variety of different shortcake desserts using the dessert shells and Del Monte fruit cup snacks.
