5 Things to Do With Toddlers When You’re Stuck Inside!

Although we live far enough south to have some very nice weather days in the middle of winter, I know not all parents are that lucky. I have watched more than a few crazy snowstorms dump on different parts of the country. And all I can think of are the parents of toddlers who are stuck keeping their toddlers inside until summer hits. So I went on the hunt for some great things to do with toddlers when going outside is not an option!

1. Throw a Dance Party

If your toddler is anything like mine, then he loves to dance! I can turn on almost any music and W is ready to bust a move. It’s a simple and affordable way to get your little one moving. Even if you live in a smaller space, there’s enough room to break it down! So try something different and have a toddler dance party in your living room!

2. Toss the Toys

No, I’m not talking about the trash. Turn clean up time into a fun game. Get out your toy bins and baskets. It might take a bit of planning because I’ll admit that you don’t want the big heavy toys involved in this game. But soft toys are perfect for trying to make baskets into your toy storage. Take turns trying to toss the toys into the basket and suddenly a chore has turned into a fun game!

3. Get Your Ride On!

Ride on toys that are small enough to be inside are a great way to keep little ones moving while stuck indoors. W recently had the chance to take a ride on the Mega Bloks® Whirl ‘n Twirl™. We are huge Mega Bloks® fans, so I was excited to try the ride-on toy with caster wheels. I’ve learned that caster wheels are on riding toys are essential because they make it much easier to maneuver.

The Mega Bloks® Whirl ‘n Twirl™ features built-in storage for blocks or other toys. W has already stored a variety of things inside. Sometimes he uses it for his Mega Bloks® but  he’s also put other cars and even clothes in the storage space beneath the seat. He’s a huge fan of having a little space to hide things.

He also loves how easy it is to drive around the edges of the rug in our living room. That is where the caster wheels come in handy. They make it much easier for little fit to make quick turns. And he likes to go fast whether we’re inside or outside!

You can learn more about the Mega Bloks® Whirl ‘n Twirl™ on the Mega Bloks® website or by connecting with Mega Bloks® on Facebook or on Twitter @MegaBloks.

4. Hunt for Hidden Treasure

This is a great idea for kids of all ages and can easily be tweaked for toddlers. Set up a treasure hunt that will take the kids around the house. For toddlers, you can replace the riddles with physical challenges like:

  • Jump three times
  • Crawl to the kitchen
  • Clap four times
  • Walk backwards to the door

Getting them moving and having fun is the key! The treasure at the end of the hunt may not even be that important if they have fun going through the clues!

5. Go to the Zoo

While a zoo trip in cold weather is not a perfect family outing, you can still enjoy seeing the animals. Bring the animals into your home. Pretend to be different animals by making the sounds they make and imitating how they move. You can slither like snake, hop like a frog, or fly like a bird.

Of course, if your little one is like W, it seems like he is always on the move. But finding ways to offer more structured activities that get toddlers moving can help everyone stay sane when you’re stuck inside!
